Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track), Site Investigation – Queen’s University
The Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering at Queen’s University invites applications for a Tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with specialization in Site Investigation with a preferred starting date of July 1, 2018.
The successful candidate will develop a research program in the broad field of site investigation for characterization and prediction of the behaviour of Earth materials. The successful candidate will employ field, laboratory, and computational tools to investigate Earth materials and Earth systems. This may include the mineralogical, chemical, physical, and mechanical nature and history of Earth materials in support of the exploration for, and development and protection of water, oil, gas, aggregate and mineral resources; the mitigation of natural hazards; the safe development of surface and subsurface infrastructure; the prediction and mitigation of impacts of climate change; and/or the disposal of waste materials. We seek an individual with a strong geological and field work background who will use and develop the next generation of field tools and protocols, integrated with modern laboratory and computational analysis, to assess these aspects of Earth materials and to develop sophisticated geological model conceptualizations.
While bringing new advances in field investigation to Queen's, the successful candidate will also be expected to complement existing research strengths within the department and to integrate fieldwork and investigative developments with new or ongoing research within the Department’s world-class analytical laboratories, especially the Queen’s Geomechanics Laboratory, Queen’s Tectonics Research Laboratory, the Queen’s Facility for Isotope Research, and Geophysics and Geodesy. In keeping with the departmental strength in field learning, the successful candidate would become a leader in field teaching for Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering.
Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent degree completed at the start date of the appointment. The main criteria for selection are research and teaching excellence. Current registration as, or eligibility to register as a P.Eng. is required, and as a P.Geo., would be considered an asset.
The successful candidate will provide evidence of high quality scholarly output that demonstrates potential for independent research leading to peer assessed publications and the securing of external research funding, as well as strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and an ongoing commitment to academic and pedagogical excellence in support of the department’s programs. Candidates must provide evidence of an ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and student-centred environment. The successful candidate will be required to make substantive contributions through service to the department, the Faculty, the University, and/or the broader community. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is subject to final budgetary approval by the University.
