CPARC Communications Officer

Job Summary 
The Canadian Particle Astrophysics Research Centre (CPARC) at Queen’s University is a federally funded initiative of the Canada First Excellence Research Fund. Queen’s and the many partners within CPARC are creating a network of research personnel to advance the topics of dark matter and neutrino research. A CPARC Administrative Centre has been created to support the research activities and create unique programming to: i) enrich the experience of individuals who are a part of CPARC; ii) expand the partnership of public, academic and private organizations; and iii) translate the knowledge into areas that can impact the lives of Canadians. 

Reporting to the Managing Director, the CPARC Communications Officer is responsible for identifying, developing and implementing communications tactics and approaches in order to deliver on the communications strategy. The aim is to support and advance the CPARC goals and priorities, which include: 

● Excellence in the scientific community and research 
● Attraction of highly qualified people 
● Growing the partners of CPARC 
● Knowledge translation of the science 
● Strong management and governance

Supporting key relationships is critical to the role as are issues management, strategic thinking, planning and implementation. 

Job Description 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

External Communications 
● Lead and manage the development, content generation for, and maintenance and monitoring of the CPARC website and social media platforms. 
● Advise management on communications implementation and tactics, and provide recommendations on brochures, publications and digital collateral (websites and web graphics, e-newsletters, social media initiatives) as requested. 
● Develop and produce content for various publications, digital communications, and other materials using new and existing platforms and processes. These communications include brochures, letters, information kits, annual reports, and digital collateral such as; website copy, news stories, e-newsletters, video content, research profiles, key messages, backgrounders, fact sheets, social media initiatives and promotional materials. 
● Provides expert advice and guidance towards management and maintenance of the CPARC brand; identifies new communications tools and opportunities, and develops and implements these initiatives to strengthen the brand. 
● Monitors the CPARC social media accounts for potential story or engagement opportunities (positive) or issues (negative). 
● Contributes to the development and delivery of the CPARC External Relations Strategy. 
● In consultation with the Managing Director and Business Development Manager, develop promotional content to attract critical investments to Canadian research in the areas of CPARC – relatable to industry 
● Assess, develop and execute new communications opportunities, including the promotion of key events, activities and success stories to support new initiatives and to advance the reputation of the Faculty. 
● In conjunction with the other CPARC staff ensure CPARC brand and message is consistent across all knowledge translation activities 
● Lead, create and implement special initiatives targeting interactions with under-represented populations with physics and CPARC 
● Act as a liaison between the CPARC team, faculty and central communications to identify opportunities for collaboration and leverage resources. 

Internal Communications 
● Create profiles on the CPARC researchers and existing experiments currently under development and operational. Ensure timely preparation and publication/distribution of funding announcements and success stories. 
● Collect and maintain a database of success stories and CPARC strengths. 
● Provide regular communications updates to the senior CPARC management team. 
● Contribute to the marketing and communications strategy and the development of marketing plans to enhance student recruitment through CPARC. 
● Identify and foster faculty experts for proactive and responsive media relations in collaboration with News and Media Services to maximize exposure for CPARC and its University partners in the national, international, regional and local media. 
● Oversee the student communication activities and advise on the creation of content, while mentoring students in science communication. 
● Coordinate proactive media relations, involving the identification of newsworthy topics for CPARC, conduct daily media monitoring, liaising with appropriate media outlets, and scheduling media interviews as required. 
● Review analytics across various social and digital media channels and make content recommendations based on analysis. 
● Proofread CPARC printed material and solicit and edit submissions for publication 
● Undertake and implement special projects and other duties as assigned. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
● Undergraduate university degree with a focus on communications. 
● Combination of experience and education in science communication, strategic marketing/communications or external relations. 
● Experience communicating the ideas of a scientific community to various audiences. 
● Familiarity with web and digital media tools and their use to enable an organizational strategy including WordPress, Slack, Mail Chimp, and Hootsuite or comparable tools. 
● Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. 

SPECIAL SKILLS: 
● Project Management Skills: Ability to identify opportunities to align and co-ordinate initiatives with similar objectives. Manage and execute projects, monitor and update project tasks/timelines and budgets. 
● Communication and Strategic Marketing Skills: Superior written and oral communication skills. Capable of writing for various audiences (i.e. internal and external) on various platforms. Understanding how web users read online and social media terminology. Ability to identify and deal with sensitive matters including those related to reputational issues. 
● Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work with many different individuals across Canadian universities and build/nurture strong relationships (senior administrative staff, faculty, students, media and government offices). Must be an excellent team player and can work simultaneously with many individuals and departments to accomplish tasks. 
● Time Management Skills: Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple tasks, ability to stay focused on high impact initiatives. Results oriented: must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision. 
● Technical Skills: Excellent computer skills and ability to readily learn new applications. Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, power point. Experience working with content management systems for web publishing. Knowledge of html would be an asset. 
● Research Skills: Research and analytical skills to collect, process, and summarize data. 
● Social Media: The ability to recommend strategies for strategic brand management and engagement initiatives in response to cultural and social trends, especially as they relate to social media. Comfortable creating and distributing content specific to the various social media platforms. 
● Creativity: Ability to effectively develop and recommend creative and innovative tactics and approaches to promote the success stories and activities of CPARC. 

DECISION MAKING: 
● As a resource to the senior leadership team participate in strategic discussions, and contribute to decisions related to the strategic direction of the science and administration. 
● Evaluate and determine most effective means to communicate with both an internal and external audience. 
● Identify necessary and appropriate content and tone for various written and online communications i.e.: brochures, website, emails, newsletters, speeches, publications, social media, etc. 
● Determine which stakeholders need consultation in arriving at decisions regarding communications. Given the high interdependency of this role in working across the physics community and within units and teams at Queen’s University it is important to engage in high impact communication decisions. 
● Determine most efficient process in developing identified communication initiatives (i.e. work with external agencies or work with internal resources) providing synthesized recommendations to the CPARC Scientific and Managing Directors. 
● Collaborate to determine timelines and logistics for planning successful events. 
● Recognition of when to take issues and decisions to the Managing Director and when to act independently.
