Job Description

In accordance with Canada World Youth (CWY)’s mission, vision and values, in addition to the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors and the President and CEO, and in cooperation with the management team, the Director of Indigenous Programing is responsible for the development of CWY’s indigenous programs, and for the engaged leadership and management of relations with Indigenous communities, groups, organizations and youth.

 

The Director of Indigenous Programing primary responsibilities will include:

§  building strategic relationships with indigenous communities, organizations and groups;

§  creating the organization’s strategic plan with respects to indigenous programing, annual business plans and Indigenous Relations work plan;

§  supporting a President & CEO and organizational goals respecting Indigenous relations and reflected in youth programming;

§  establishing realistic short, medium and long-term goals and objectives that include specific standards and activities based on selected measurable outcomes;

§  supporting Program and Monitoring & Evaluation teams in knowledge of concepts and practices in the development and strengthening of indigenous relations and youth programming.

Responsibilities

Planning and organization

ü  Set objectives and work priorities for the Indigenous Programs, in close relation to CWY organizational priorities as announced by the President and CEO and Board of Directors, including engagement with Indigenous communities, groups, organizations, leaders and youth.

ü  Establish the annual action plan of the department, in order to efficiently carry out organizational priorities.

ü  Plan the department's needs in financial, human and material resources in order to efficiently carry out the action plan.

ü  Manage optimal and equitable sharing of workloads.

ü  Maintain effective coordination among the organizational departments, the different components of the Indigenous programs, other programs, requirements of other departments and the organizational priorities.

ü  Integrate equity in to the program components, management and operations of the Indigenous programs.

 

Leadership and monitoring

ü  Manage implementation of the department's annual action plans with due regard for adopted budgets, policies and procedures announced by the President and Board.

ü  Review the performance of personnel under their supervision and follow up on it.

ü  Contribute to the process of staffing, development and termination of personnel employed in their department.

ü  Mobilize and provide direction and support to personnel assigned to the Indigenous programs in order to accomplish objectives and organizational priorities.

ü  Maintain performance management systems to evaluate and monitor the performance of personnel, Indigenous programs, organizational priorities and action plans. 

ü  Prepare and present quarterly progress reports on the Indigenous Programs for internal purposes and for funders according to the timeline specified in agreements.

 

Indigenous Programs

ü  Work closely with Vice-President, Programming and Operations and Director, Monitoring and Evaluation

ü  Analyze and review the attainment of the Indigenous Programs’ objectives, make recommendations to the President and make the necessary adjustments based on the given directives.

ü  Manage risks, follow-up and resolve incidents brought to their attention within the Indigenous Programs, and notify the President through summary reports.

ü  Ensure the development and growth of the Indigenous Programs in relation to CWY organizational priorities.

ü  Establish and consolidate relations with the communities, alumni and volunteers.

ü  Provide Program Management including recruitment, reporting, supervision to Indigenous youth participants

 

Program development

ü  Implement and review the Indigenous programs and assigned activities in order to achieve set objectives.

ü  Contribute to development of Indigenous programs and strategies.

ü  Determine and coordinate research requirements for Indigenous programs.

ü  Establish a development plan and maintain partnerships in Canada and overseas.

ü  Ensure due diligence and maintain risk management frameworks related to the health and safety of youth participating in programs.

ü  Establish specific tools, appropriate mechanisms and processes to provide quality support to partners and participants with due regard to laws and regulations of provinces and partner countries.

ü  Ensure compliance of CWY protocols with overseas and Canadian partners.

ü  Establish, supervise and consolidate reports by partners and communities concerning Indigenous programs.

ü  Implement strategies to improve and increase the impact and promote the Indigenous programs using educational and support resources for alumni.

ü  Participate in the marketing and public awareness strategy.

ü  Act as a CWY representative in Canada and overseas (i.e. program review mission, special mandates, etc). Maintain public relations strategies and activities with designated partners, donor agencies, the public, private sectors, educational institutions, healthcare, environment and equity sectors. 

 

Funding

ü  Establish and consolidate relations with designated partners and funders, in the public and private sectors, with educational institutions, and the healthcare and environment sectors, as delegated by the President and CEO.

ü  Draft funding proposals and initiate dialogues with prospective funders.

 

 

Required qualifications and experience

Particular working conditions

ü  Graduate degree preferred in a relevant field of study

ü  Equivalent combinations of education and senior management experience will be considered.

ü  Minimum five (5) to seven (7) years of:

§  progressive senior management experience and role in a government, non-profit, public or private sector organizations leading Indigenous strategies, programs and relationships;

§  demonstrated experience in international programming, international development, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), United Nations and other international instruments, mechanisms and bodies impacting indigenous peoples;

§  demonstrated experience in successful fundraising results;

§  demonstrated experience in undertaking consultations with key internal and external stakeholders;

§  demonstrated experience in creating and supporting the implementation of a strategic approach to fundraising include major gifts, corporate donations, grant solicitation, and government calls-for-proposals;

§  demonstrable knowledge and sensitivity of the realities indigenous youth and communities, as well as Indigenous languages, cultures, identities, traditional practices and land based relationships.

§  demonstrable thorough knowledge of local, national and international indigenous programming strategies.

§  Demonstrated strategic indigenous program development.

ü  Ability to travel in Canada and internationally to perform short term missions.

ü  Be able to work overtime to meet deadlines, where necessary.

ü  Be on call on a rotating basis.

ü  Position based in Ottawa
