Job Description

This role works with the Alberta Stakeholder Engagement (ASE) branch in the northeast region of the province and will provide proactive and reactive engagement support with a primary focus on Indigenous Communities but also to support local stakeholders including, but not limited to, landowners, community groups, municipal councils, Environmental Non-government Organizations and energy industry operators. Regional ASE staff provide engagement support to the AER field centres in the region, Bonnyville, Slave Lake and Fort McMurray Field offices and will help to implement local engagement related to AER sanctioned projects and initiatives. This role is based out of the Edmonton Regional AER Office.


  • Proactively and reactively engage regional stakeholders and indigenous using engagement best practices and adhering to the AER stakeholder engagement principles

  • Actively participate with stakeholder and indigenous communities to resolve concerns relating to energy developments; this may include coaching parties prior to a dispute resolution meeting

  • Assist stakeholders to understand and appropriately access regulatory information and processes ensuring their voices and concerns are heard and addressed

  • Increase stakeholder awareness of the AER and its functions throughout the entire lifecycle through educational events, communications, community events, and presentations.

  • Support AER sanctioned projects and initiatives by contributing to engagement planning and implementation at the local level

  • Support the engagement needs of AER field centres within the region; establish and maintain excellent working relationships with all AER staff

  • Participate in regional, branch and division meetings and training

  • Seek and act on opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement

  • Establish and maintain a network of contacts across the region

  • Maintain current accounting of activity in StakeTracker database

  • Contribute to monthly, quarterly and annual reporting


  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline (i.e. Conflict Management, Aboriginal Studies, Communications, Resource Management Education, with 7+ years related, progressive experience in community and indigenous engagement.

  • Demonstrated understanding of Alberta’s energy regulatory system with strong fundamental experience in public lands and specified enactments , i.e. EPEA, Water Act

  • Experience in developing proactive and comprehensive engagement plans and related materials

  • Strong conflict management and facilitation skills, conflict resolution

  • Excellent written and interpersonal skills

  • Collaborative and multi-disciplinary, team style with the ability to trouble-shoot, solve problems, and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a calm and professional manner

  • Knowledge about or direct experience with the oil and gas industry is necessary

  • IAP2 Certification would be an asset 

Additional requirements/information for candidates:

  • This is a full time position

  • This position requires extensive travel throughout the province and occasional nights away

  • Possess a fully valid Alberta driver’s license and a positive driving record is required. A graduated license will not be accepted.

  • Successful candidate must provide the AER with a Driver’s Abstract

  • Valid Safety tickets will be an asset (First Aid, H2S Alive, Driver Training etc)
